Mpox is a virus that is spread from person to person through direct contact with the infectious rash or body fluids or through respiratory secretions during prolonged face-to-face contact, or during intimate physical contact, such as kissing, cuddling, or sex. Anyone can get mpox. So far, the majority of cases identified globally and in North Carolina in the current outbreak have been in men who have sex with men. The virus does not spread exclusively through any one gender, sexual, or social network. Mpox is not related to chickenpox.
There are two types of mpox: clade I and clade II. Both clades can spread through direct contact with infected wild animals, through close contact (including intimate or sexual contact) with a person with mpox, and through contact with contaminated materials.
