Melinda was born in Indiana but grew up in Alabama. She did her undergraduate studies at UNC Chapel Hill and graduate work at University of Tennessee, Knoxville and East Tennessee State University. She has been a family nurse practitioner (FNP) for over 20 years and has practiced in Florida, California, and North Carolina in a variety of settings. She is currently working full-time as a professor of nursing at Appalachian State University but continues to volunteer at AppHealthCare in Ashe and Alleghany counties providing healthcare services to farmworkers and their families and to some of our Latino/Latina immigrant families. She speaks Spanish and gets a lot of opportunities to use this second language with patients. Melinda thoroughly enjoys living in the NC mountains where she does a lot of walking, hiking, gardening, and fruit gleaning. She has a wonderful partner (Tim) and a beautiful dog (Mie). She is interested in nutrition and other lifestyle habits to prevent disease.
